Origin of Bhil Tribe Art

by Universaltribes Admin on Mar 31, 2023

Bhil art is very old in India, and it is also the largest community among Indian tribes today. This art is thought to have originated in prehistoric times. The reference to Bhil people in the ancient Hindu epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, established this tribe as one of India's most ancient tribes. Valmiki, who wrote the Ramayana, was also a Bhil. Previously, the Bhil community lived in rocky and hilly terrain. This tribal community now exists in western and central India, with major subgroups found in northern Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Vasava, Bheelala, Tadvi Dholi, Garasia, Mewasi, Bhagalia, and Rawal are the major Bhil tribes.

Bhils have fought against Mughals, Marathas, and British in the past and have been recognised as great warriors. The Bhils are well known for their superstitious nature, believing in a wide range of spirits, ghosts, gods, goddesses, and deities. These people only followed their predetermined set of rules and regulations.
